X Bank is a store and gallery, which opened in the complex around W Hotel. It is just behind Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam. The name is a reference to the old function of the building: a bank. But you will be challenged not to spend your money when you enter this store. The X Bank is a treasure trove for local products which deserve an international podium.
X Bank lay out
You enter the X Bank on street level at the Spuistraat. On the ground floor this store is a gallery. They regularly exhibit art on the walls and on the display platforms. In between these objects is in artful display of some luxury items like perfumes. On one side is a coffee bar, where you can gather your courage to dive into a shoppers paradise on the first floor.
You reach the shopping area via a winding staircase. On that floor is the main shopping area in a long, narrow space with different levels. We think the lay-out is clever, because it invites you to wander around. You get the feeling that around every corner is a new treasure waiting for you. You can release your inner magpie when you walk around here.
Local offerings, international allure
What X Bank offers is an eclectic mix of fashion, art and design. They want to blend these three professions and blend them within their space. On offer is a wide variety of clothes, furniture, personal care products, art objects and food. Prices range from modest to eye watering high.
X Bank focuses on designers/artists with a Dutch background: be it either born in The Netherlands of having had an education on one of the Dutch art schools. They regularly update their display, so you will be offered something new on every return visit. See their website for the latest offering and exhibitions. What you get is an Amsterdam version of the famous Colette in Paris, but without the tech gadget and with a local flavor.
