On one of our pub crawls, last week, we started with a simple dinner at Getto. It was a pleasant surprise for us that in the tsunami of tourists, that Warmoesstraat is, a truly gay restaurant survives. After almost 20 years of service, the concept has stayed more or less the same.
On the menu you can choose from a dozen or so Diva Burgers – burgers named after famous Diva’s in Amsterdam. There’s the Lady Galore Beef Burger, the Jennifer Hopelezz Beef Burger, and of course the Dolly Bellefleur Lamb Burger. And added for free: Getto Homo fries are lightly dusted in 100% genuine fairy dust.
This is definitely the gayest restaurant menu in Amsterdam!
And where else would they decorate a Diva Burger with a pickle, an olive and an onion?
The restaurant has a large video screen, that shows mostly animation films. But we also saw some footage of a cowboy, with a horse, undressing himself to the barest minimum without getting indecent, and washing his clothes in the horse’s drinking trough.
What does that have to do with a restaurant? Nothing! Is it gay? Yes!
We tried to make a picture of the cowboy, but it turned out a bit vague. Well, use your imagination on the picture below.
What would a gay restaurant be without a house cat? She can be very cuddly, but also on the warpath. The warning sign is not there for nothing!
Pleasant cat <-> human encounters are for her to choose (they do occur) – clients have no say!
The restaurant has a bar in the front section, the restaurant is at the back. It seats about 25 people, so not very suitable for large groups. The staff is gay (& friendly), and the guests at least half gay – a place not to be missed when you visit Amsterdam.
