The rather new gay bar The Engel Next Door, an annex of the famed Engel van Amsterdam, closes down immediately.
The closure did not go unnoticed. Apparently, the bar has received various complaints by neighbours, who complained about noise and/or guests blocking the Zeedijk. The owner in return complained that a neighbouring shop sold trays of beer to visitors of the Engel Next Door. And there are also complaints that the City enforces legal rules in a discriminatory way.
In any case, the atmosphere amongst entrepreneurs and various inhabitants is down the drain. And so is our ability to find out the truth as to what the details of the conflicts are.
The whole thing got out slightly out of hand after the owner of de Engel decided to close down early one night, after complaints by neighbours. Clients of De Engel did not accept this, and started to riot.
Today the news got out that De Engel Next Door closes down. The owner says it is because of the never-ending complaints, but there are also rumours that the bar wasn’t really financially successful.
Anyway, we moved the Engel Next Door is now an angel on our Graveyard page of gay bars gone past.
The Engel van Amsterdam will continue business as usual.
