The Philippine photographer Cindy Aquino has won the Pride Photo Award 2013 with a photo from her series ‘Bond’. Cindy was one of the 408 participants out of 48 countries. The jury thought the wining photograph shows a “very human and intimate moment, told in a very loving manner.” On the 23rd August the award was handed to Ciny Aquino in the Old Church of Amsterdam. She was the overall winner of this years edition, but many more prizes were awarded. Prizes were awarded in four categories: Extremely Normal – 2013 theme, Gender, Documentary and the Open category.
Cindy Aquino’s motivation are her friends, who are regularly discriminated because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. With her pictures she wants to show society that LGBT people are normal people, who love each other just like anyone else, who have relationships and are simply happy.
The jury were touched by the many personal stories that were told in many of the photographs. “The particpating artists use photopgraphy to think about issues that touch them personally. The photopgraphs force the viewer to think about identity, love and homophobia.” The jury appreciated the positive and personal stories told by this years entries. The big issues with which LGBT people are often confronted in daily life, where less prevalent in this years entries.
Pride Photo Award is the annual, international photographic competition about sexual and gender diversity. The 2013 edition was themed “Extremely Normal“.
