Increasing violence against Gay and Lesbians in Amsterdam

In 2011 a total of 564 gay and lesbian related incidents were officially reported to the Amsterdam police. Incidents are related to physical or verbal violence. In 2012 this number increased towards 620. The final number for 2013 is not yet known. An analysis shows that most offenders are between 15 and 25 years. On the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (I.D.A.H.O.) the results of a European Union (UE) wide research on homophobia were presented. Some 90.000 people took part in this research and their feedback to the questions give some grim reading. Day against Homophobia & Transphobia

This year the Dutch government will host the International Conference against homophobia and transphobia. The conference will take place in The Hague, starts on May 15th and closes on May 17th, which is the international day against Homo and Transphobia. More information on www.dayagainsthomophobia.org. Queen Maxima will join the dinner on the 16th. Let’s hope that is an indication of a bit more royal support for the gay, lesbian and transgender community!
