Today a ‘warning message’ arrived in the Amsterdam headlines: the existence of Amsterdam’s only gay/lesbian bookstore, Vrolijk, is no longer to be taken for granted.
Almost 4 years ago we went there to interview the store about its interior renovation and general update, on the occasion of its 30th birthday. You can read the interview here. Back then, a new investor, Mr Leendert Rietveld, decided to put money into the store, to give it a new kick-start.
Now, he is not so optimistic any more. The new interior, that includes a coffee corner with free WiFi on the top floor, does not seem to work as desired. In the past few years, several book presentations and lectures have been organized – nothing with enough effect. Since mid-December the wholesale book organization does not send new books to Vrolijk, te replenish the stock – hence, the shelves become emptier every day.
Not all is lost. The owner is looking to create a plan to save the bookstore. And in the meantime, we call upon everyone to buy books and gifts in the store.
Next week it is Valentine’s Day, so why not buy your gifts here? Chop chop, shop shop!
