Impression of Café Rouge

Café Rouge is what used to be the Monopole bar, which was very popular in the 1980’s and 1990’s (with mustache lovers!). When it was still the Monopole, on Sunday afternoon there could be so many men that they spilled over to the streets, sometimes blocking the street by their numbers.

How different is this today. On the Friday evening we visited our little GayLinc tour group easily outnumbered the clientele PLUS staff. The bar was dreadfully silent, and there was no atmosphere to speak of. We saw the same thing on our previous GayLinc tour, when we peeked in, and decided to go somewhere else.

We don’t know what caused it – the barman was kind enough, the flowers nice, the collection of Royalty pictures impressive, the interior kind of typical Dutch brown cafe….
Apparently, it’s just not the place to be on a Friday night.

We hope it is better on other evenings.

Rouge 52.366897, 4.896097 Cafe Rouge CLOSED DOWN: CHANGED INTO CAFE DUBBEL D, but is still gay. Spotless interior, dominated by red wallpaper, autographed tidbits and an unnatural big bouquet of roses. We were not impressed by the atmosphere, despite the valiant attempts of the dj to make it a party. Closed in 2012 for some time, but re-opened again. At this address used to be the gay bar Monopole, very popular in the 1980\'s and 90\'s.
