(old) Argos

The predecessor of the current Argos opened in the early 1950's at Heintje Hoekssteeg 15. It is commonly said to be the oldest leather bar in Europe.

We had a look on July 31 2015: it has become an ice parlour. We don't know what happened.

Anco still exists as a hotel, but ownership has changed, and it does no longer advertise itself as a gay hotel. Several comments on TripAdvisor suggest it has become a general hotel.
Therefore, we no longer list Anco as a gay hotel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anco

Men-only hotel since 1962. Used to have a very sleazy bar in the 1980's but that part has disappeared. Now a decent gay hotel, in a 17th century canal house.

Bar Chez (used to be called Chez René)

CLOSED DOWN IN DECEMBER 2016!
This pub was in the past twice voted best gay bar in the Netherlands. Now we asked ourselves 'why'. Yes the staff is friendly, the general atmosphere okay, but 'best gay bar'? Probably it says more about the rest of the gay bars.  Still worth a visit on a night out.

Adress: Amstel 50
Open: Every day, after 6 PM  till 3 or 4 AM

De Barderij

2017 update: the cafe has been sold to new owners, who hired new staff. As a result, the gay atmostphere went out of the window, unfortunately. After consistent rumours that the Barderij was no longer a gay hangout, we took a look ourselvers. On Good Friday 2017 (April 14) the bar was almost empty, apart from a group of young tourists. The conclusion was inevitable: the Barderij is no longer gay.

(2016 update: The story is that the cafe was sold and that its new owner wasn't to keen to continue the gay business. We visited the bar one evening in March 2016 and noticed that not much has changed. This may be different during the day when De Barderij is supposed to be used by people wiating for their canal tour. To be continued)

Brown cafe with mixed clientele, rather middle aged. Many local and regular guests. Relaxed atmosphere. On a quiet night you may feel a bit lost (and looked at). Possibility of loud sing-along-music with Dutch and gay classics. Unique selling point is the little niche - the "tickle room" - in the back, with view on several canals and a sluice.

A bit of history: an organization called COC was founded in the fifties and its aim was to have equals rights for gays and lesbians. One of its activities was to be a 'club' and allow the 'members of the club' to meet. One of the initiatives was a dancing called DOK, which opened its doors in 1952. A few years later COC moved its activities to a new location (Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 49) where from 1955 until the mid sixties the members could meet and dance at De Schakel. Later COC moved to a new location at de Rozenstraat. Both DOK and De Schakel were infamous and both attracted people from all over Europe (and beyond).

Cafe Dubbel D

CLOSED: This cafe did not survive an entire year - it closed down in October 2015,  to change into Queers Café.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Years ago this was the location of Monopole Cafe. Later it was re-opened as Cafe Rouge. Early 2015 it opened as cafe Dubbel D. The interior is light and welcoming; the crowd on a Saturday night young and energetic. The bar tries hard to be the place to be, which we support of course! If you like Conchita, our former Queen (see picture) or the occasional drag queen then hurry and make your way to Dubbel D (The 2015 GayLINC Raspberry Award for the name by the way).

Dvars

Update: due to a fire Dvars has been closed since the fall of 2014. This happened to be a permanent closure. A new place opened in its' place: La Cage

Dvars - fish tank

Dvars - fish tank

A name that's hard to translate. The correct spelling in Dutch would be 'dwars', which means something like stubborn or contrary. Having replaced the W with a V maybe shows character? We didn't think so. It's actually not 'dwars' at all. It's the ideal place if you are a young gay executive, if you like fancy fish tanks or an audience that prefers a glass of wine in a cocktail bar. Our suggestion: take a peek and if you like it - you love it, if you don't, just go to the next bar.

Eldorado (also known as Moors Eldorado) was located on Amstel 14, from 1963 until 1983. It was owned by Moor Lewkowitz. Her girlfriend was bartender, which made the bar popular with gays and lesbians. History tells us that the bar had no windows, making it impossible to see what was going on inside. A few years after the closure of the bar Gaiety opened its doors (and windows) on Amstel 14.

Entre Nous

Don't come too early, but wait for the crowd late at night. Mostly Dutch sing-a-long music, but don't let that frighten you off. It really is very easy going.

Exit

Habibi Ana - to close down March 2, 2013 (see news post)

Note 4 April 2014: this address has another business, so Habibi Ana definitely no longer exists.

The first Arabian gay bar in town! Small, but still light and airy interior, with Maroccan details. Not a typical set up for a gay bar: garden benches and small rattan stools, give it almost a lounge feel. On friday and saturday from 22.00 hours and on sunday from 18.00 hours a dj will play popular Arabian dance music. Mixed Arabian and Dutch crowd. A mediterranean pearl in the Amsterdam gay scene.

Havana

A notorious name in gay Amsterdam. In the 1980's this used to be the Viking. After the Viking closed down, it became the Havana. There have been several Havana's, the last of which closed down in January 2012.

iT

Famous nightclub, very much connected to the decadent 1980's. The iT was set up by Manfred Langer, a 1980's iconic entrepreneur (see Wikipedia). His funeral in 1994, with a pink Chevrolet, followed by 20 white cars, made the national news. You can still see his statue on his grave on the cemetery Zorgvlied. At the location of the iT is now club Air.

La Cage restaurant

Late october 2016 La Cage closed again and the place is up for sale. It's a shame, because we quite liked La Cage. This location is becoming a hotspot for failed bars and restaurants.

Restaurant that opened in 2016, at the same address as where once bar Arc, Dvars and bar Eve were located.
'Gay friendly' we'd say. On Sundays this place has hamburgers served by transvestites.

Wasn't La Strada the place to be! It was great to go for a coffee, see what was happening, who was chatting with whom, enjoy a glass of white wine with your latest lover or struggle to keep the conversation going with your blind date. Two things for sure, La Strada was relaxed and you could always discuss the art on the wall.

Mon Ami (closed in December 2012, according to newspaper Parool)

Formerly known as the Krokodil, this bar know attracts a slightly younger audience and is not the hang out of grey gays any more.
In the same unashamedly old fashioned, kitsch interior gay men of Amsterdam gather in a friendly atmosphere.

Address: Amstelstraat 34

Music Box

We moved the Music Box to the Graveyard, for the time being. Its status as a pickup place for rental boys can not be verified independently. There is no own website. Also, we got an anonymous comment from someone, saying that the place was under new management and no longer gay. Added to that, the bar didn't have a spotless reputation anyway. We'll have a look again later, and see if we can get further info.

The Paardenstraat is the old rent-a-boy street of Amsterdam. In the past closet gay men and employees from surrounding offices would come down to see if they could fullfill their dream in exchange for a ‘little’ money. The heydays of this business have gone, but the remnants are still there. The street, close to a square where young straight people celebrate their weekend, still has a seedy feel. The Music Box is one of the last surviving bars there. This is the more descreet of those bars.

Cafe Rouge

CLOSED DOWN: CHANGED INTO CAFE DUBBEL D, but is still gay.

Spotless interior, dominated by red wallpaper, autographed tidbits and an unnatural big bouquet of roses. We were not impressed by the atmosphere, despite the valiant attempts of the dj to make it a party. Closed in 2012 for some time, but re-opened again. At this address used to be the gay bar Monopole, very popular in the 1980's and 90's.

A neighbour successfully complained about the noise, apparently. The club owner Edgar Bonte saw no possibilities to invest again in noise insulation, and decided to pull the plug.
