Accidents & Illness

Accidents

When you’re involved in an accident the things to do are quite straightforward: if it is really serious call 112 and try to explain briefly what happened. They will dispatch the right service to you. In many cases the involvement of the police is necessary to make a report which you’ll need for your insurance. If the accident is less serious you can go to a First Aid post at one of the hospitals to get any medical treatment you might need.

Illness – doctors, pharmacies, dentists & drugstores

When you get ill, you may need a doctor. Take care you have a fat credit card or else a good health insurance that covers costs made abroad from you home country! The easiest thing to do is to ask the hotel staff or your hosts if they know a doctor and let them make an appointment. If neither is possible contact the central telephone number for doctor’s services (‘dokters telefoon’):

(020)5923434

Tell them what your complaints are, where you are staying and if necessary they may give you a doctor’s telephone number, who is residing in the are where you are staying. For more urgent serious matters (e.g. injuries) you can also go to a First Aid station (EHBO in Dutch). They are always open, day and night. We list you the following:

  • AMC, Meibergdreef 9, tel 5669111
  • Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, Eerste Oosterparkstraat 279, tel 5999111

Pharmacies (Apotheek)

In pharmacies you can get a medicine on a prescription by doctor or specialist only. Apart from that they also sell non-prescription articles, that can also be bought at drugstores. A pharmacy is usually open from 8.30 to 18.00 h (Check! Times may vary), from Monday through Friday. During the night and weekends they have rotating shifts. To find out which one is open at night or in the weekend, you go to the nearest one and it will be written on the door. You may also call a ‘central telephone number for pharmacies services’:

A drugstore or ‘drogist or drogisterij’ in Dutch sells items for which one doesn’t need a prescription from doctor or specialist, e.g. aspirin, cough mixtures, etc. Apart from that they usually also sell health products, candy, make up & cosmetics, sanitary napkins, kotex, condoms, etc. The names of some big drugstrores are: DA, Etos, De Tuinen, Trekpleister, Kruidvat.

Dentists (tandartsen)

If you need immediate dental care, again the easiest thing to do is to ask the hotel staff or your hosts if they know a dentist and let them make an appointment. If this is not possible contact the central telephone number for doctor’s services (‘dokters telefoon’):

(020)5923434

Take care you are sufficiently insured or have a fat credit card.
