From the 6th to the 13th of December the IQMF 2017 or the 2017 edition of the International Queer & Migrant Film Festival hits Amsterdam. It is maybe a less well-known event, but it is a sure gem of a festival. It offers not only screenings of interesting movies, but also debates, parties and even a dinner. Here are our picks of what is on offer.

Our picks from the IQMF 2017 films

The International Queer & Migrant Film Festival offers a range of movies and documentaries. When you visit them all, you have almost visited almost all continents of the world. And you will have experienced the travels, joys and tribulations of people of a lot of backgrounds and cultures. The great thing about this festival that at the end of the movies there is often a change for a debate with the makers, experts and of course other audience members. Most movies have English subtitles.

  • I Dream in Another Language, December 6th at 7.30PM:  A young linguist travels to the Mexican jungle to research and save a mysterious indigenous language on the verge of extinction due to a fight between the last two speakers. He uncovers a secret, concealed by the language.
  • Abu (Father), December 7th at 8.15PM: Pakistani gay filmmaker Arshad Khan examines his troubled relationship with his devout, Muslim father Abu and their struggle with religion, sexuality, colonialism and migration to Canada.
  • Chronic, December 7th at 1.10PM: A story of sex, love and trauma in the city of Beirut
  • Upon the Shadow, December 8th at 6PM: documentary about the first Femen activist in Tunisia and about her life after she became famous for her protest.
  • Girl Unbound, December 8th at 8PM: the documentary about a girl defying the Taliban by disguising as a boy.
  • Homøe – Looking For Shelter + The Migrant Mixtape, December 9th at 2 PM: documentary following three people fleeing persecution, among whom is Boris a Russian man who finds shelter in a German LGTQI refugee shelter.
  • The Wound, December 6th at 10PM: Xolani, a lonely factory worker, travels to the rural mountains with the men of his community to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood.

Other events

ICMF 2017 logoAlthough movies take the centre stage, IQMF 2017 has also a lot of fun events organized during the festival.

WTF Queer Night or WTF Wednesday creates a safe queer space with a mixture of visual and performance artists, musicians and local drag kings and queens. This night we celebrate the opening of IQMF festival with several performances.

At Refugee Diner new Dutch LGTBQI residents share a table with their fellow countrymen. The evening is focused on connection and exchanging experiences. New Dutch residents: free. Please apply with lara@iqmf.nl. Other guests pay €27,50, this includes a two course dinner and a ticket for the film. The programme is a collaboration of IQMF and Secret Garden.

The Party Club Pera invites IQMF for a night of sweaty beats in a sticky room. Openminded queer party with Pink Istanbul residents. Meet IQMF’s programming team and all the fabulous guests at this steaming party!

Tickets and location

Most movies ar shown at De Balie, a debate and cultural centre near the Leidseplein in the middle of Amsterdam. Tickets are €9,- per film and you can buy those via the website page of each film at the IQMF website. There you can see the full program with many more films and events.
