‘Check It’ is a documentary about possibly the only gay street gang in the world. In Washington DC a group of black gay and transsexual young people formed a gang to protect each other against violence and abuse. The gang members earn a living like any street gang: with robberies and theft. But they also created a family for each other to feel safe and be themselves. Over the years the gang has grown to over 200 members and established a place for itself in the street culture of Washington DC.
Filmmakers Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer gained the trust of a couple of the gang members and were allowed to follow and film them. The created a documentary centered around three gang members, which shows their troubled past, their present day lives within the gang and their hopes for the future.
This documentary is part of an evening called ‘What’s Up?’. This is a series of evenings about the latest developments within the creative industry in Amsterdam.
