COC Song Contest? Is that an even gayer version of the Eurovision Song Contest? Yes, it is! The Netherlands with Willeke Alberti only collected 4 points at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994. That meant that The Netherlands didn’t to take part in the 1995 edition of this festival. The LGBTQI community came into action after this disgrace. The national LGBTQI organization COC organized a national Song Contest.

Amsterdam selection for COC Song Contest

For the first time in many years, COC Amsterdam branch is participating in the Song Contest. And the Amsterdam branch wants to win! So COC Amsterdam organizes a selection event to get the best Amsterdam candidate for the national COC Song Contest. You can take part as a candidate, you can come and watch and as a member of the public you can vote.

Becoming a COC Song Contest Contestant

There is space for 10 candidates in this Amsterdam selection round. One prerequisite is that your song has to have a LGBTQI theme. You have to sing live this evening and no backing vocals on tape are allowed. You can sing your song in any language. And if you win, you will represent Amsterdam at the national final on the 2nd of december in Groningen. You can apply by sending an e-mail to the COC Amsterdam branch.

Detailed rules for entries:
  1. Every contestant can sing one song with a maximum length of 4 minutes.
  2. All vocals need to be sung live, instrumentals can be on tape.
  3. The song is preferably an original song, never having been performed (inter)nationally.
  4. Choice of language for the song is free.
  5. The song has to have a LGBTQI+ theme.
  6. Text- and songwriters can be involved with 2 songs at most.

The jury

One of the fun bits of Song Contests is the voting. This Song Contest has a two tier voting system. There is a professional jury consisting of Willeke Morren (a song contest expert), Reinier ter Harten (frontman of music-theatre group Reindier, an expert on popmusic and singing) and Niki Today (Miss Drag Queen Holland 2016, Pride Amsterdam 2017 ambassador and expert on musical direction).

And of course there is a jury from the public. The COC selects 25 jury members from all those people who have sponsored this event with a financial contribution.
