Saarein is located in the Jordaan, and just celebrated its 40th birthday. It was founded by a women’s collective as a women-only bar back in 1978. At the time it was one of the few bars in The Netherlands exclusively hosted towards (lesbian) women. But times are changing, and now all queer minded people are welcome. However, it remains a bar with predominantly female clientele. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, not in the least because of the typical 19th century interior of an Amsterdam bar.
Saarein offers an internal smoking area, nicely separated from the main area. We enjoyed our drinks, sitting on the split level balcony, overlooking the bar and two typical Jordaan streets.
