Tuesday 27th of May, the veteran Italian rock diva Gianna Nannini gave a concert in Amsterdam’s pop tempel Paradiso. Nannini has a career spanning over 30 years and is a particular favorite among the lesbian crowd. The guitar playing Italian rock chick from Sienna plays a melodic variety of pop rock and sings with a melancholic raspy voice. You might call her the Italian Melissa Etheridge. When pregnant of her daughter in 2010 she showed of her belly covered in a t-shirt with the text “God is a woman”.
Fashionably late she started her concert. But she made up for this late entry with an energetic performance. Gianna played a mix of old and new songs, like ‘Bello e impossibile‘, ‘Ragazzo dell’Europa‘ and ‘Io‘. Her voice was still in great shape and as an experienced performer, she woo-ed the crowd and got enthusiastic reactions. Many songs were not just performed for the crowd, but together with the crowd.
After a couple of rock songs that blew the roof of the building, Gianna performed a couple of more melancholic, balad type songs. This was a logical build up to the third section of the concert: a couple of songs where Gianna was backed up with only the drummer or the drummer with some accoustic guitars. These songs brought out the raw beauty of Gianna’s voice and the strength of her songs. The final part was a real crowd pleaser with a selection of her greatest hits. She gave it all and then some: a great concert, showing that good rock and good rockers are age-less.
