Amistad Hotel & B&B

One of the few remaining LGBTQ hotels in Amsterdam. After an extensive renovation it opened again in the summer of 2018. In 2015 a new owner took over the hotel. He wants to keep Amistad a LGBTQ friendly hotel in the middle of one of the oldest gay streets in Amsterdam.

The hotel is small and intimate. It offers a mix of rooms and studios. A favourite among regular visitors is the breakfast at the communal breakfast table.

Amstel Fifty Four

This is one of the old and trusted establishments in the Amsterdam gay scene: open to public since 1964.

Restyled & renamed, but it still keeps some of the old atmosphere. The customers seem a bit less colorful (and drunk) than in the old days. The bar hosts regular events with drag queens and DJ's. Together with neighboring gay bars they organize themed evenings.

The doormen at the bar sometimes follow an unclear door policy. Some online reviews complain about trying to take advantage of tourist by them.

'Nothing worse could happen to me after all that has happened', said Benno Premsela, Jew and survivor of the persecution of Jews during WWII, and so he decided to become an openly gay man at a time when that really didn't exist yet. Because there was no space for openly gays, he decided to create that space himself. He joined the Dutch Gay Movement (COC) and became chair man for many years. In 1964 he was the first gay man on Dutch television, who showed his face and used his real name. This openness was for him the only way to change the public image of gays and lesbians. It may be hard to realize now how revolutionary and brave that was less than 50 years ago. The modern gay/lesbian movement will be in his debt forever. Professionally he had started as designer and became noted as window-dresser for the Bijenkorf at Dam Square in Amsterdam. Later he became a famous designer and 'art pope' of Amsterdam. It seemed he sat in every art committee of any importance. He was painted, sculpted and photographed by many contemporary artists. But important and famous as he was, he was always willing to advise and support any gay/lesbian initiative, if only by giving advise how to furnish a local COC.Just  a bridge has been named after him - this man deserves a square!

Brug 34

Brug 34 is a new addition to the gay scene of Amsterdam. It is a mix of a coffee bar and wine bar. "Coffee (to go) by day - drinks by night"  is therefore their slogan. Apart from coffee or beer, you can also can get breakfast and lunch. The menu is small, but the quality of the food is good.

It is a tiny bar, with a bright and minimalistic interior. At night in the weekend chairs and tables go to the side and the local drag queen will spin some records. Unfortunately that means that the dj-set seems almost to block the entry to the bar.

On the plus side however is the terras of Brug 34 on the bridge over the Herengracht canal (Brug is bridge in Dutch). This leafy place gives you a great view on a beautfull canal, while still enjoying the hustle and bustle of the traffic of the trendy Utrechtsestraat.

You see fashionistas, lawyers, students and everything in between. A special attraction is the traffic to its’ next door neighbor: the well known coffeeshop Boerenjongens. That traffic is managed by an impressive looking steetmanager, dressed like a Sherlock Holmes character.

BurlesQue

The concept of Burlesque is to recreate the atmosphere and glamour of the high society in the 1930’s and 1940’s. That means fine dining, cocktails and a cabaret or musical style entertainment in one evening setting on Friday and Saturday. Reservations are required and you have to arrive in time for your seats: that is between 6 and 6.30PM. On other nights seating times are a bit more relaxed.

The menu consists brasserie type dishes with influences of Asian and American dishes. Its also heavily centered on the shared dining experience. In other words small, not to expensive dishes to combine and share with your companions.

Interesting enough for a restaurant it has a set of strict house rules. To quote one of them “We dress to impress and would love it if you do too. No sports sneakers, sports clothing or caps allowed”.

Information and reservations

The website of BurlesQue is also up and running. Here you can find news about special menus and their wine and drinks card. This is also the place of course to make a reservation if you want to try it out.

Opening times:
  • Monday & Tuesday closed
  • Wednesday: 5Pm - 1AM
  • Thursday: 5Pm - 1AM
  • Friday: 6.30PM - reservation required
  • Saturday: 6.30PM - reservation required

Cafe 't Mandje

In 1927 Cafe (bar) 't Mandje was established. It was run by Bet van Beeren and later by her sister Greet. There are many stories to be told about this bar, some true, most somewhat true and others invented. Fact is that the bar was not what we would call a gay or lesbian bar. It was a place to meet, have a drink, talk, play pool and maybe dance. Today Bet would be known as a lesbian, but she would surely have disagreed with such a label. Cafe 't Mandje must have been more like a place where you could go and to some degree be yourself. On Queensday Bet would allow men to dance with men and women with women. Later she allowed same sex couples to kiss in her bar. Bet disliked ties and the story is that she would cut them and hang them form the ceiling. The current bar still has a few on display. During the world war Bet was involved in giving jewish people a safe place to hide.

Bet died in 1967 and a few years later her sister Greet had to close the bar due to the decline of the neighbourhood. In 2008 the bar was re-opened, its interior very close to the original. Bet's apartment on the first floor can be visited.

"Let it be known that homosexuals are not cowards." (Last words of Willem Arondéus)

Commemoration plaque Attack on the Register of Births

This is the location of where the Amsterdam Register of Births used to be. The Nazis used this register to find out where Jews were living, so they could be arrested. To prevent this, the underground resistance staged a bomb attack on the register, in 1943.
This group was led by Willem Arondéus (Wikipedia), who was openly gay, even before the war started. The attack destroyed the Register only partly, and the resistance group was soon arrested and executed. Arondéus' name is mentioned on the plaque in the wall of the building next to the entrance of Artis Zoo (Plantage Kerklaan 36). Also, his name lives on in the name of a yearly lecture, organized by the Province of Noordholland, the Willem Arondéus Lecture.
In 1945, the Dutch Government awarded him a medal, posthumously.
Willem Arondéus lies buried on the Eerebegraafplaats Bloemendaal (website), a special cemetery in the dunes near Haarlem, where 373 World War II resistance fighters are buried (locate on map).graf-willem-arondeus
Grave of Willem Arondéus in the dunes near Haarlem

Sjoerd Bakker
Sjoerd Bakker (who was also gay) was also involved in the attack on the registry - he was a tailor, so he made the police uniforms necessary for the men who carried out the attack.
Sjoerd Bakker was also caught and executed, his name is the 10th name on the commemoration plaque at Plantage Kerklaan 36.
Like Willem Arondéus, he lies buried at the honorary cemetery Bloemendaal.

Drakes

Surprisingly accessible sexshop/cinema. You buy a ticket in the shop and go upstairs to an area where there are about 15 cabins for your private video-show. Practically every cabin has a glory hole, and there are peep holes so that you can see what the other is doing. Free WiFi is available in the cruising area. The ticket (E 11,-, free entrance for < 26 years) is valid all day, so you can go in and out, and also share a ticket with a friend. There is a mixed age public here, younger & older - the free entrance for guys younger than 26 probably has something to do with this.
Compared to Le Salon this place is reasonably well-maintained and clean. Also, it seems a lot busier.
There is a vending machine for soft drinks.

Erik's gay Bed and Breakfast Amsterdam
A small, one guest bed & breakfast at outside of the city centre. The gay owner lives and works at home, but as a photographer he has regular outdoor assignments. So with just you as a guest it is a very relaxed and quiet B&B. Adding to the relaxed atmosphere is the sunny terrace and the 'clothing optional' policy in the entire house.

The house is about 30 minutes by tram (tramline 1) from the city centre in a modern neighborhood. For those traveling by car to Amsterdam, there is the added bonus that parking is free in this area.

On other nights drinks take the centre stage with drinks themed evening (think of Tequila Thursday etc.). Overall a crowd of 20 and 30 something ready to go clubbing or get an after drink when they left the dance floor. On Friday they open up early for the end of the week Friday afternoon drink.

Fame

This pub opened on December 11, 2016, on the same place as Bar Chez. Their slogan on the Facebook page is 'Come in, have fun, dance and sing-a-long!'. That is just what Fame is as was the case with its predecessors.

If you have visited the bar before, you might be a bit turned around. That is just what has happened: they moved the bar from one side of the bar to the other one. We like the uncomplicated, friendly atmosphere in this relatively small and cosy bar. They have regular bar events with offers of cheap shots or wine, depending on the weather and the occasion.

The public is a mix of gays and there straight bff’s. A mix of all ages, although slightly on the younger side. Fame is a great bar in this area of gay bars to get together with a larger group of friends and have a fun night together.

Gerrit van der Veen (1902 - 1944), sculpture, leading  member of the Dutch  resistance during the second world war and initiator of a group making false identity documents. By doing so his group saved many from going to a concentration camp. The monument dedicated to Van der Veen is not far from the monument in memory of the attack on the ‘bevolkingsregister’ in March 1943. The aim of this attack was to destroy as much information about Amsterdam’s population as possible.

Grave of Aaicha Bergamin (7 January 1932 - 31 May 2014

Aaicha Bergamin was a well-known transgender woman (born as a boy). She lived in various places, but most of the time in Amsterdam, which is also where she died. During her life she suffered from police harassment and discrimination by her family and society in general. But she always remained strong. When she finally received a passport which officially acknowledged her being a woman, she is said to have gone to the police station where she said to the officers her famous words: "I'm a whore, I'm a woman and you can't stop me!"

Impoverished, she received a municipal grave on the cemetery Sint Barbara near the Westerpark, without any tombstone, only marked with a number. The historian Alex Bakker organized a fund raiser to mark her grave with a proper work of art.
This was unveiled on July 28 2015, in the presence of about 100 guests. The singer/artist Dolly Bellefleur sang several songs in her honour, to mark the occasion.

Homomonument
Monument in commemoration of persecution of homosexuals.
The monument consists of 3 large pink marble triangles, together forming a larger triangle. The pink triangle was used in the Nazi concentration camps to mark homosexuals (similar to the yellow star for Jews).
On the monument you can read a text 'Naar vriendschap zulk een mateloos verlangen' (To friendship such an endless desire). This is a famous quote of the gay (and Jewish) poet Jacob Israël de Haan.
The monument (created in 1987) attracts many gay visitors from all over the world. One of the triangles sticks out into the Keizersgracht canal. Often you will find flowers laid here by visitors.

HotSpot
Hotspot used to be located on the Amstel riverside, but relocated in 2016 to this alley around the corner or the Royal Palace. It is next door to one of the famous coffeeshops in Amsterdam called Abraxas.

Hotspot is a brightly lit, narrow bar. Interesting is the smoking room halfway up the bar. Overall the interior has a slight neon, nineties feel. On a recent Gaylinc pub crawl we were surprised to find the bar near empty around 12PM on a Friday night. A couple of weeks later one of the Gaylinc editors visited it on a Saturday night and the bar was packed.
Hotspot Café
Hotspot Café

The bar was filled with men in their 20's and 30's generally having a good time singing along the gay pop tunes blasting through the speakers. The bar regularly puts on special events like a Video bingo. Or as they call themselves "a cosy, no nonsense bar for drinks and snacks".

Open: Wednesday throughSunday  from 4PM till 1AM (3AM on Friday and Saturday

Le Salon

Cinema and sex shop. There are a dozen or so cabins, with porn tv's. You can choose between gay and straight porn. The place is not exclusively gay, but the glory holes in the cabins can mean only one thing - as far as we know.
The interior is, well....., nicely put: original 1980's vintage (some people would call it filthy and in dire need of maintenance). The cinema has sort of a darkroom (a compartment next to the seats, with no lighting), and 2 sofas, seating perhaps 6 persons. With the squeaky, steep staircases connecting the various rooms, this is a true Amsterdam experience!

Manfred Langer was and still is one of the gay icons of the 1980's and 1990's. He was born in Vienna in 1952. When he was 20 he fell in love with a Dutchman and moved to Amsterdam. In the late 1970's he started his career as an entrepreneur and innovator in the gay scene. He first ran a few bars in the Halvemaansteeg and introduced the happy hour in Amsterdam. He is most known for the gay nightclub iT, which opened in 1989. iT was known for it's extravagant parties and attracted night birds and celebrities from around the world.

In 1994 Manfred discovered he had cancer and died in the same year. His funeral procession was as extravagant as the parties in the iT and became a nation news event.

Not many traces are left in the city are left of Manfred in Amsterdam. However you can still visit his grave with life like statue and the Zorgvlied cemetary. Look for grave number N II 0698FG.

Montmartre

It used to be a very popular gay bar: crowded, with lots of minor local celebrities. But when we there last it was quite empty with no celebrities (local nor minor) in sight. Was it the wrong evening or is something else going on?

Since that visit Montmartre is slowly staging a comeback and getting more popular again. It organizes regular events like karaoke evenings and open mic night. Expect a party atmosphere and friendly banter.

Mr B

Well-known leather/rubber/fetish store. On September 1, 2018, Mr B moved from its location in Warmoesstraat (nr 89) to Prinsengracht 192.
The reasons for the move (quoted from their Facebook account):
"Our store became an attraction for many tourists, but mostly for the wrong reasons. Our customers didn’t always feel at ease with the hordes of tourists coming in, often laughing at what they saw. It is time for us to move to a location which allows us to focus solely on our customers, not the people coming in for their Instagram selfies”, says owner Nelson Sousa da Cunha.

Niek Engelschmanbrug

This bridge is named after Niek Engelsman (a.k.a. Bob Angelo, November 12 1913-October 27 1988), an openly gay member of the resistance during World War II. After the war he played an important role in setting up what later became the COC, the most important Dutch gay movement organization.
From the bridge you have a view on the Homomonument.

Oeverlanden / Nieuwe Meer

By far the most popular of all cruising places in or near Amsterdam. 'Nieuwe Meer' is the name of the lake, 'Oeverlanden' the name of the park area. In recent years, the cruising area has received attention from the general public, as the park became more popular. There were complaints about the cruising, and the local authorities decided to create a real, official, designated cruising area. The first official one that we know of.
There is a gas station close by, where you may buy something to drink or eat.
Swimming in the lake is possible.
The area is busier on sunny days than after dark. Cruising here after dark is not without risk, some incidents have been reported. In the area you may also find Scottish Highlanders, brown hairy cows that are completely harmless, and often used in Dutch park areas for grazing.
Recreation is 'clothes optional'!
UPDATE July 2017: an incident happened at the Nieuwe Meer (Amsterdam West) when a man was attacked when talking to a group of 8 young men on scooters around 11pm. One of the young men hit him badly and broke his jaw. The police is investigating the case. The Nieuwe Meer has been a nice area for nudism and cruising, but with a rapidly expanding city it is not as remote and unknown as it used to be.

Prik

Relaxed mixed crowd, thirty-something, alternative crowd, women friendly although mainly gay men. Prik is one of the pillars of the gay scene in Amsterdam.

The staff always go out of their way to make you feel welcome and they serve great drinks and snacks. It is the gay bar with the best cocktails in Amsterdam. This is the place where a large part of the Amsterdam gay community hangs out and meest their friends. Almost like the Central Perk of gay Amsterdam.

The terrace is also worth the mention. It was the winner in our gay terraces test.

Prik also regularly organizes events like real life speed dates or pubquizes. They also host events of local gay groups, like the monthly drink of hiv positive men or events of the gay expat group.

Ideal bar to visit with your new boy friend, but also nice to sit at the bar and have a beer. The Queen's Head comes with a small stage, so you could expect some entertainment during your night out. Think of events like Karaoke, Bingo, Draq queen performances or a DJ spinning records.

Queers Café

Fast becoming one of the most popular gay bars in Amsterdam, Queers is relatively new on the scene. Located next to the Kleine Komedie theater, Queers gives its’ neighor a run for its’money in the field of entertainment and laughs. The gay crowd (mostly gay men) flock to the bar where drag queens perform on a small podium in the back of the bar on Fancy Friday.

Often very good drag queen acts entertain the crowd with live singing, dancing and  small banter with the public. Meanwhile the professional staff behind the bar quickly serviced all the customers who ordered a drink.

Other events you can expect there are bingo nights and singalongs.

So definitely a bar to check out to have a good time while you are in Amsterdam.

Reality

A bar with the explicit aim to integrate gay men from all the different ethnic groups who live in Amsterdam. The emphasis is more on men from the Caribbean Isles and Suriname. The atmosphere reflects this crowd and has a party/carnaval feel. Recently they started to organize jazz & blues themed Open Mic evenings on Sunday's.

When we were there on a Friday around 10 pm, it was still rather quiet. It wasn’t empty in an awkward kind of way, there were some people in the bar, and some outside. Still, it should have been a bit more busy, perhaps. After all, it was a Friday night, and not extremely early. So expect to get this bar to get alive later at night.

The bar is very close to the very popular and very straight Rembrandt plein. So sometimes the street in front of the bar can have a bit of a rough atmosphere. Inside the bar is very friendly and welcoming.

Saarein

Saarein is located in the Jordaan, one of the most interesting areas of Amsterdam. It’s a bar with a long history, going back to the 19th century, according to the owners. We know for sure it’s history goes back to 1978 when a group of 10 women founded Saarein as a women-only bar. After a long successful period a change of management led to Saarein as we currently know it: a cosy bar, welcoming to everybody, couples or singles alike. Every third Sunday of the month as of 5 pm Saarein welcomes transgenders. Saarein offers an internal smoking area, nicely separated from the main area. We enjoyed our drinks, sitting on the split level balcony, over looking the bar and two typical Jordaan streets.

Address: Elandsstraat 119
Open: Tu-Th 5pm-1am, Sa-Su 5pm-2am

Seasons exterior When walking through then quant neighborhood of De Jordaan, you might wanna stop in restaurant Seasons in the Herenstraat. This elegant, small restaurant is situated in a street filled with quaint shops and nice restaurants. Of all these restaurants (many good and a few excellent) Seasons proudly flies it’s colours with a big rainbow flag. You can stop here for lunch and dinner. We’ve stopped here recently for dinner and were pleasantly surprised.

The interior is a mix of classic and modern, with references to the old canal houses thanks to it’s floral wall paper and with comfortable, modern tables and chairs. The ceilings are high, which gives you a spacious feel. It is a small restaurant, with in total about 40 seatings. The international group of waiters are punctual and friendly and English speaking.Seasons interior

The menu is an international mix, with French, Dutch and Asian traditional meals on the card. Often they try to give a twist to these meals by deconstructing them. At our recent visit we had for example a deconstructed Ceasar salad and a Beef Wellington. Both were of good quality and it was nice to see the old classic Beef Wellington back on a menu. The quality of the food is good as are the drinks.

One of the best things is their early bird special: when you make a reservation on their website for a dinner before 18.00 hours, you can eat for two for the price of one! An offer you can hardly refuse.

Is this restaurant gay? These days there are hardly any restaurant in Amsterdam is exclusively gay or lesbian. The same can be said for Seasons, but the staff are either gay or gay friendly. That creates a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, where you can have a nice dinner date with you lover or a good dinner party with your friends.

Soho

Inside the bar has a grand English gentlemens pub interior, with bars across two floors linked by a big staircase. On the ground floor a dancing area has been created and on the first floor a smoking room gives shelter for the die heart nicotine addicts on cold evenings. Over the years the interior has become well worn in a pleasant way: the floors tell stories of parties, the bar of successful pick ups and the chairs of intimate conversations. We liked what we saw.

The staff run the bar well from their big central serving area. They are friendly and attentive. They get the party started and keep it going, while keeping an eye on everybody’s well being in this big bar.

The crowd is very mixed and mixes well with the neigbouring places like Taboo bar, Exit bar and Nyx nightclub. Expect a young and older, professionals and students, locals and tourists. Maybe not the most extravagant or creative crowd, but Soho is well worth a visit on a night out.

Spijker

Pub off the beaten track, but well worth the visit. Located in the cellar of a 17th century building, with pool table and open fire place.
De Spijker has a mixed, mostly local crowd leaning towards the leather scene and friendly staff.
Next to the pool table are the stairs leading to the toilets (mirrored!) and a small, very dark darkroom.

The bar has the proud slogan "serving the gay community since 1978". It has good links with several local gay (sports) clubs. These clubs regularly organize drinks in the bar. Of the several themed nights the Lesbique party are noteworthy: a lesbian, queer party.

Taboo Kantine

Is it a bar or is it a restaurant? A little bit of both. It is the newest addition to the Reguliersdwarsstraat gay scene and a sister to the well known Taboo bar. It is a cozy bar for drinks, cocktails, a little byte and dessert. So since it is next door to the Taboo bar we classify this as a restaurant, be it for solid or liquid diner.

Zandvoort, nudist beach

The nudist beach of Zandvoort is located on the south side of this city: some 30 minutes by train from Amsterdam and then a good half hour walk (south) to the offical nudist beach. You’ll find lots of gay Amsterdam men enjoying summer on this beach. The dunes at this beach are known to be a cruising area, but not as popular as years ago. Mind you, this is not a part of the nudist beach and the police will (from time to time) make sure that everybody is sufficiently dressed and not too busy.
Cruising is only in the daytime.

't Mandje

The oldest still surviving gay bar in Amsterdam. It started in 1927 by the legendary Bet van Beeren: a fearless lesbian woman. It is still going strong as a great meeting point for men and women, young and old, locals and visitors of the city. On average the clients are slightly older. Thanks to its historical interior and the many Amsterdammers visiting the pub, it has a real local feel. Everybody feels quickly at home in this bar and since it is so tiny, it will soon feel populated and festive.

The music is a bit loud sometimes. You can expect (inter)national hits from the 1950’s till the 1990’s. This place is an easy place to meet-up when you go out with friends, or the last stop before each goes their way home.

What is special about ‘t Mandje is its regular program. On Sunday afternoons you can go to a Sunday Singalong with Suzanna. From 4PM onwards, Suzanna will accompany the crowd with her digital accordion to a sing-a-long of popular tunes. On Tuesdays from 8PM onwards, Pete will treat you to the best Jazz tunes. And once every so months, Nicola Snaas and her musicians is giving a live jazz concert. Look at the Facebook page for the latest events news.
