Violence and discrimination

Violence directed against you or your companion(s)

When you are attacked this can be a terrifying experience. Luckily not many people in Amsterdam have to go through this. If it does happen, there are several organisations which might be able to help you. Of course the police, ambulance and hospitals are listed here, but also two specific organisations: one helps you to fight discrimination on the bases of gender, colour of skin or sexual preference, the second one supports you to overcome the trauma of an attack.

  • Police - Head Office (Politie), Elandsgracht 117, tel 5599111

Hospitals (Ziekenhuis):

  • AMC, Meibergdreef 9, tel 5669111
  • Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, Eerste Oosterparkstraat 279, tel 5999111
  • Polikliniek Sint Lucas Ziekenhuis, Jan Tooropstraat 164, tel 5108911

  • Anti-discrimination centre (Meldpunt discriminatie Amsterdam) Vijzelstraat 77 1hg, tel 6385551

Discrimination based on your sexuality or ethnic background

Government and non-governmental organisations in The Netherlands actively fight discrimination. So if you feel unfairly treated because of your ethnic background, sexuality or gender don't hesitate to contact one or more of the organisations listed below. Remember: if you don't report it, they don't know it and can't fight it.

  • Police (Politie), Elandsgracht 117, tel 5599111
  • Victim-aid (Slachtofferhulp) Elandsgracht 15-I, tel 6228441
